Bowie author/artist releases new book on the post Civil War frontier

Published

on

During the years since his retirement as a radiologist, north central Texas resident Stan Briney has created for himself a successful second career both in the art world and free-lance writing.

His most current endeavor is authoring “Thunder at River Station,” a fictional story based on historical locations and events.

It tells of the lives and experiences of two physicians practicing medicine during and following the Civil War. It chronicles life on the lawless western frontier from Missouri to Texas between 1850 and 1890. It is a gripping story everyone should enjoy.

The Bowie Public Library will have a book signing for Briney from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jan. 31. Read more about the author and his new book in the Saturday News. Pictured Stan Briney and the cover for his latest book.

July Jam planned for July 27

Published

on

The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.
