HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Tough outing for area powerlifters

Published

on

Three Bowie and two Nocona High School powerlifters competed in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state meet.
Overall, 233 lifters from across the Lone Star State competed – indicating how tough it is to medal on the grand stage – at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.
“The girls meet just keeps getting more competitive each year,” Bowie head coach Quentin Berend said. “More and more girls are getting involved and competing in powerlifting.”
Berend reported each weight class had about 20 girls.
“That made it hard to bring home medals,” the coach commented.
Bowie’s Hannah Shaw finished the best of all the area powerlifters.
Shaw placed 11th in the 148-pound division with a three-lift total of 750 pounds, which included a squat of 315 pounds. Mia Casas from Hebbronville was the winner (920 pounds).
Shelbi Rhoda placed 14th at 132 pounds with 705 pounds lifted, and that included a 300-pound dead lift. Sierra Paredez from San Angelo Grape Creek was tops, lifting 840 pounds. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.
