HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: In these parts, fans have been behaving badly

“Character is much easier kept than recovered.”
Those are the words of 18th century author Thomas Paine, who also penned “Common Sense,” which is part of a guidebook called “Character Attitude Responsibility Ethics: Sportsmanship and UIL Athletics.”
This is the University Interscholastic League’s 28-page book concerning issues such as the behavior of fans, student-athletes, cheerleaders and coaches.
Recently, incidents in both Nocona and Boyd have brought the topic of fan behavior to light.
At a recent District 3A-9 game between Henrietta and Nocona, Times Record News sports reporter Jonathan Hull was in the process of interviewing Bearcat center Logan Carter.
Hull, in a blog dated Jan. 13, was interviewing Carter when he heard someone yell, “You’re terrible.”
Game officials were walking by Hull while the interview was taking place, and Carter thought the “You’re terrible” comment was directed at him – and not the referees. Read more, and see a guideline for behaviors, in The Bowie News for Jan. 23.
