Bowie High School right-handed pitcher Chandler Dean made it official on Tuesday, signing with Northeast Texas Community College in Mt. Pleasant.
The reigning District 3A-9 most valuable player helped the Jackrabbits win both district and bi-district titles last season, and a 26-4 overall record.
“He understands how to pitch,” said NTCC assistant baseball coach/recruiting coordinator Austin Knight. “He has all the physical tools, so it was a no-brainer (to recruit Dean). We are super excited to have him.”
NTCC plays in competitive National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIV, in Division I East with Navarro, Bossier Parish, Panola, Paris and Angelina.
Coincidentally, Navarro – one of NTCC’s main rivals – also was looking at Dean, and he took an official visit there as well.
But, in the end, Dean chose to play for the Josh Stewart-led Eagles. NTCC has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, with 300 or so living on campus, Knight reported.
The Eagles are coming off a season in which they went 30-21, and won two games at the postseason regional tournament. They lost to San Jacinto, who eventually represented the region at the College World Series. Read more in the Jan. 23 Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.

“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”

Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
