HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Playoff access denied

The Bowie High School softball team opened Friday’s District 3A-9 game in rather dubious fashion.
The Lady Rabbits committed defensive errors during three of Holliday’s first four plate appearances as the Lady Eagles bolted to a 4-0 lead.
Bowie may have responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Holliday pitcher Jennifer Wright silenced the Lady Rabbits’ bats long enough for the Lady Eagles to stretch their lead.
In the end, Holliday doubled up Bowie 10-5, thus ending the Lady Rabbits season.
Since Bowie lost, and Henrietta topped Jacksboro 11-8, the Lady Bearcats seized the final playoff spot in 3A-9.
“We talked about the need to jump out early,” Bowie head coach Brant Farris said. “But we had three errors in the first four batters, and that put us behind the eight-ball.”
It put a final damper on a district season that started with so much promise. Bowie was 6-1 through its first seven games, but then the Lady Rabbits (16-12-2, 8-6) served as maroon-colored prey during the second half of the 3A-9 slate. Bowie center fielder Addy Cook makes a clean play here; however, most of the time Bowie’s softball team turned fielding into an adventure with five errors in a season-ending loss to Holliday. (News photo by Eric Viccaro)
