HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Bowie hears rallying cry, wins

Bowie High School shortstop Chandler Dean saw Glen Dunnam hold up all five fingers when the pitching coach called for time in the top of the seventh inning.
Gunter had base runners on second and third base, and Dean hurried into the dugout to change his glove. He thought he was taking over for Trace Hardee on the mound.
Dunnam told Dean to return to shortstop, and player Justin Bolton scrambled in the dugout – and a second timeout was issued – in order give Dean his infielder’s glove back.
And it’s a good thing Bolton raced out there to hand Dean his fielder’s glove.
Gunter’s Mason Mazerolle lined out sharply to shortstop to end the game, giving Bowie the best-of-3 series over the Tigers as the Jackrabbits won the rubber game of the Conference 3A Region 2 quarterfinals 3-1.
“I was like, ‘What in the world is going on?’” said Bowie head baseball coach Ryan Rogers. “Everything was spinning. It was a miscommunication. We had to call time twice.”

Van Alstyne is next

Now Bowie will play Van Alstyne, another top-ranked team, in a best-3 series starting at 7 p.m. on May 26 at Kennedale. Game Two will take place at 2 p.m. on May 28, with the if-necessary Game Three 30 minutes thereafter.
Like Gunter, Van Alstyne won its district (3A-13). The Panthers are currently 24-2-2 on the season under head coach Jimmy Haynes.

Game Two

Bowie 9, Gunter 8

Keck Jones opened up the bottom of the sixth with an innocent single past shortstop Troy Watson. Trace Hardee followed by sacrificing Jones to second.

Game Three

Bowie 3, Gunter 1

Gunter could only muster one run during the game as Gunter tagged up at third and scored during the third inning. Read more, and see complete box scores, in the May 25 Bowie News.
