Bowie High School head football coach Dylan Stark said he’s eagerly awaiting Friday’s home scrimmage versus Bridgeport.
The event will begin at 5 p.m., with the Bowie and Bridgeport junior varsity teams squaring off, followed by a period with just freshmen and then varsity action begins at 7:07 p.m.
“We will get a lot of reps,” Stark said. “They (Bridgeport) have more than 100 kids out, and we have more than 60. It’s going to be good to see somebody else.”
Stark said all drives will start on the 30-yard line. Should a team advance the ball inside the opposition’s 20, teams will enter four-down mode.
Turnovers, either fumbles or interceptions, will be blown dead at the spot.
Bridgeport is a stout Conference 4A school.

Nocona

Nocona will have a home scrimmage at 6 p.m. on Friday versus Windthorst at Jack Crain Stadium.
“The varsity players will have four sets of 10 plays, and the junior varsity will have two sets of 10 plays, and then a set of five,” said Nocona coach Brad Keck, when asked about the format.
Keck said the goal of the scrimmage is to emerge healthy, and the coaching staff will be using the time as an evaluation tool.

Six-Man

Saint Jo will scrimmage both Savoy and Tioga at 6:30 p.m. at Harley Sewell Field, and Victory Christian of Decatur also will participate.
“We just added Savoy,” said Saint Jo head coach Chad Tallon. “It’s always exciting to get to this week, with the first scrimmage.”
Tallon expects to see a reloaded Tioga contingent; however, the Bulldogs fell short of the playoffs last year despite a heap of talent. Savoy doesn’t have fast Alex Caldwell any longer since he’s graduated.
Saint Jo will play Savoy in a 20-minute period at the end of the scrimmage. Other periods will vary in length from 10 to 15 minutes, and shift from offense to defense.

The Bowie cheerleading team went to cheer camp on July 13-16 at Texas Women’s University.
It was a good opportunity for the team to learn new things to take into the school year, according to cheer sponsor Destanie Curry.
“They learn their job is not to just lead the crowds in cheers, but they are ambassadors of their school and community and how to fulfill that role to the best of their ability,” Curry said. “Of course, they also learn stunt safety, new stunts, new cheer material and how to incorporate all this into pep rallies, routines and games.”
It can be intense, with campers expected to eat, sleep and breathe cheerleading from morning until night, staying positive and spiritful in everything they do since councilors are always watching and looking to see who will earn extra awards.
At the end of the four days, the Lady Rabbits cheerleading team took home several team and individual awards.
The team won one spirit stick daily and one on the final day. They were awarded each night to teams who demonstrated leadership, positive attitudes, excellent class participation and who respect and encourage one another, their coaches and staff.
Bowie earned its National Federation of State High School Association’s squad credential. The group earned Stunt SAFE, which was presented to teams that displayed excellent skills in spotting and stunt technique.
The final team award was in the Game Day Championship trophy. The competition included crowd involvement with a game day chant and cheer learned at the camp.
They were judged on crowd leading effectiveness, use of props, incorporation of stunts, technique and execution of skills.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
