TDA inspector visits Bowie on complaint

An inspector with the Texas Department of Agriculture visited the City of Bowie recently responding to a citizen’s complaint about possible unlicensed pesticide application by the city staff.
The complaint was made on July 8 by Roger Hamilton related to the alleged use of weed-killer type chemicals in the area of Brushy Creek at Lindsay Street and State Highway 59.
The complaint obtained from the Texas Department of Agriculture states: “Complainant witnessed city workings applying herbicide on and around Brushy Creek. He says as a retired pesticide applicator, he knows they were not doing it properly. Herbicide was running off into the creek. He says he asked one of the workers why they were doing it, and the worker said he was ‘just told to do it.’ Complainant doesn’t think anyone is licensed, nor does he think an inspector will find any records of applications, and he would like it investigated.”
City Manager Ricky Tow said an inspector with the TDA met with him about a week and a half ago requesting records and information on procedures related to spraying such as storage, sprayers, licenses, etc.

Infrastructure projects once more dominate the agenda of the Bowie City Council when it meets at 6 p.m. on May 13.
A pair of proclamations open the meeting, one for Emergency Medical Services Week and National Travel and Tourism Week.
City Manager Bert Cunningham will present information on the substation transformer project, the phase two sewer line replacement contract, status of the infrastructure fund and plans for the budget.
A pair of public works requests will ask for $24,000 out of the infrastructure fund to buy nine fire hydrants and $29,825 from the meter tap account to buy replacement meters. Public Works Director Stony Lowrance is expected to make that presentation.

Construction on the new Allsup’s truck stop located at the edge of Bowie on U.S. Highway 287 and State Highway 59 is moving along at a quick pace as the colorful new store shows off the new store colors of red, white and blue.
