Nocona ISD votes to allow conceal carry for staff

As school shootings increase in occurrence across the country and threats touched close to home last month, the Nocona Independent School Board of Trustees made a decision to arm its teachers during the March 19 meeting.
Nocona joins more than 170 school districts in the Lone Star State allowing staff to conceal carry fire arms on campus, and becomes the fifth school in Montague County along with Gold-Burg, Saint Jo, Montague and Prairie Valley.
Nocona Superintendent Dr. David Waters said while many will point to recent activities as the reason behind the school board’s decision, discussions on arming teachers began long before that.
“This is the result of several months of conversation,” Waters explained. “Many will want to point to recent events as the reason for this decision, but that is not the case.”

Daniel Deweber and Prairie Branch Properties LLC, which has been battling to get water service from the Amon Carter Lake Water Supply Corporation for the past four years, has filed suit in 97th District Court against the corporation and its board members.
The suit was filed on May 16 and list all board members including John Halbrook, president, along with Ray Smith, Lee Wayne Jones, Robert Leopold, Robert Bertoi and Louis Clayton.
This case concerns the corporation’s alleged failure to follow its own bylaws and Texas law regarding the elections of directors, appointment of office and conducting all meetings under the Open Meetings Act.

Due to heavy rains Sunday night, Lake Amon G. Carter was closed once more Monday morning as its topped 922.1 mean sea level.
The lake reopened on May 15 and Selma Park had a partial opening after being closed on April 20 following heavy rains topping nine inches in some areas. City officials reported on May 26 the lake level was 922.1 msl and rising as of 9 a.m. This is two feet above what is considered full at 920 msl.
Water filled the edges of Selma Park and once more flooded the electric service at those campsites. There also were other electrical outages in the park, which led to it being closed for camping and the lake closed for boating until water drops back to below 922 msl. Boat ramps also are closed.
Lake Amon G. Carter was at 922.29 msl on May 28, 922.37 msl on May 27, 922.09 msl on May 26 and 921.34 msl on May 25. Its most recent high point was 924.71 msl on April 27.
Lake Nocona was at 828.95 msl on May 28, 829.12 msl on May 27, 828.60 msl on May 26 and 827.92 msl on May 25. It’s highest point in the past two months was 828.43 on April 27. The lake is considered full at 827.5 msl. City officials said they have not closed the lake or boat ramps and will not until it goes two feet above full at 829.5 msl.
The Bowie City Council will meet at 6 p.m. on May 27 in council chambers.
Items on the agenda include the following: City manager’s report discussing the master plan grant, repairs to Rock and Pillar and status of the substation transformer; consent agenda of minutes and bills; speed limit ordinance update second reading; Bowie 4B Sales Tax Corporation request to approve expenditures on park enhancement project to include additional concrete parking at Pelham Park and installation of covered pickleball courts southwest of the Bowie knife and public comments.
