Bert Cunningham

By BARBARA GREEN
Bowie may soon have a new city manager as the council voted Tuesday night to offer the job to longtime Bowie businessman Bert Cunningham, who was one of the finalists interviewed back in late January.
A vacancy on the council also was filled with a former councilor drawing fire from another member and one person in the audience.
Cunningham accepted the job reports Mayor Gaylynn Burris said he has begun the prerequisites for employment including a physical and drug test. She would anticipate a start date will be set later this week after those items are satisfactorily completed.
Cunningham and his wife, Toni, have operated their printing, office supply and business forms company for more than 40 years.
The future manager has been involved in city government for many years serving as a city council member six years, mayor for six years, former chairman and longtime member of the Bowie Economic Development Corporation, president of the Bowie Rural Volunteer Fire Department Board and serving in many other community organizations.
