County-wide election precinct idea fails 2-2; weigh station examined

A tie vote on the commissioner’s court Monday resulted in no action on Montague County participating in the county-wide election precinct program.

The Texas Secretary of State is providing counties an opportunity to set up a program of county-wide voting where voters would not be required to cast ballots in specific precincts, but could vote in any location, similar to early voting. County Elections Administrator Brandi Shipman asked the court’s permission to apply for the program at its Monday meeting.

This program began back in 2005 with Lubbock County the first to implement the process. Shipman explained the county would apply for participation, and this is the initial request. After the application begins the county conducts a public hearing, selects a committee to select a method to determine polling locations and establish a communications plan that would go with the application due by Aug. 21.

The court also discussed the possibility of construction a weigh station in Montague County to weigh trucks. Department of Public Safety Trooper Robert Wilson met with the court Montague to explain the process.
