Eagle Scout project installs flag retirement urn at VFW Post

Published

on

Robert Hagen’s Eagle Project consisted of constructing an urn for placing ashes of retired U.S. Flags. On June 14, Hagen led Troop 116 in building the urn from steel pipe, plate steel and a collar and lid. All materials were purchased from scrap metal yards. The urn was placed in a hole, in front of the VFW Post 8789 on Nelson Street. Afterward, members of the VFW Post and Troop 116 gathered for a flag retirement ceremony. The retired flag was ceremoniously burned and the ashes were interred in the urn. A stone marker will be placed next to the opening of the urn. Troop 116 plans to have several flag retirement ceremonies a year, to properly retire flags that have served the community.
