On the 70th anniversary of the Battle for Iwo Jima and the 24th year for the reunion of its veterans, their families and supporters, all will join Feb. 12-15 to honor their service one last time

Organizers announced this would be the last reunion for the Iwo Jima Survivors Association of Texas. The reunion will be dedicated to Bowie’s Cy Young, founder of the Texas survivors group and to the Marines who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Thirty-one survivors attended the Texas organization’s reunion last year. Hershel “Woody” Williams, the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Iwo Jima battle, a fierce five-day combat to recapture the island from the Japanese, will be an honored guest.

Barbara Winingham, Bowie, reflects of the service of her brother Talmage Garrett in a personal story your will find in the Saturday Bowie News.
