Memorial Days ceremonies planned across Montague County

Published

on

Montague County residents can take part in a variety of activities on May 25 to honor those who have died in the line of duty for our country.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, as the holiday was centered on decorating the graves of those who had fallen in the Civil War.

At 9 a.m. Monday, there will be a flag raising ceremony in front of the home of local veteran Tom Norris, 515 Whaley in Bowie.

Bowie Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8789 will conduct ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m. at the post home, 707 Nelson. Along with the Memorial Day ceremony, the post will install new officers for the post and ladies auxiliary.

Post Commander Dr. Carl Lilly said State Commander Joe Hayes will conduct the installation ceremony. The program will include a guest speaker and music from Bowie band students.

The Texas State Guard will do a presentation on flag folding, with an oral narrative on each fold, and afterward the Boy Scouts will conduct the flag raising. Refreshments will follow after the ceremony.

Nocona VFW Post No. 8558 will conduct its Memorial Day ceremonies at 10 a.m. May 25 at the post home located at 100 Baylor.

The event is normally at the cemetery gazebo, but due to the muddy conditions it was moved.

County Judge Rick Lewis will be guest speaker. The program also includes special music including a bagpiper, a rifle salute and cannon salute.

And at 1 p.m., the Montague County Veterans Service Office will unveil new names for the county veteran’s memorial located at the courthouse.

More than 50 new veterans will be noted on the county marker.

The public is invited to attend all of these ceremonies and remember those military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

On Memorial Day, the Nocona VFW and the Nocona Senior Center invites the public to a Memorial Day barbecue from 6 to 9 p.m. at the center located at 400 Boston Street.

VFW members are grilling up ribs for all to enjoy.

The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for those under the age of 12. All proceeds to go the senior center.
