The Bowie High School football team is set for another season-opening game against Wichita Falls Hirschi.
Hirschi will attempt to spread Bowie’s defense thin with a spread offensive formation. The same alignment the Huskies gashed the Jackrabbits for 427 yards on the ground a season ago.
Still, Bowie head football coach Dylan Stark said the team has to be ready for it all.
“Hirschi has given us tough games,” Stark said. “They are athletic. On offense, they like to run a spread, but they still like to run and pass it about 50-50.”
Tavion McKinney and Gerrick McKinney will be counted on to replace Cedric Battle for the Huskies.
“We can’t miss any tackles,” Stark said. “They had some big plays on offense against us last year. We have to run to the football and wrap up.”
As of earlier this week, second-year Hirschi coach Danny Youngs was still deciding between senior Clayton Richardson and sophomore Mar’tez Vrana to be the quarterback.
Bowie will counter with a 4-3 defense spearheaded by Kevin Stallcup, a defensive lineman who produced 70 tackles last season. Safety Brandon Hutto had a team-best 78 stops. Carter Shackelford, Cayden Cox and LB Clement will be counted on to contain the Huskies as well.
Like Bowie, Hirschi also will run a 4-3 defense with the likes of linebacker Dorian Norwood leading the unit. Norwood recorded 103 tackles. Mammoth near 300-pounder Deondre Clark will be tough to run on inside.
That means Bowie’s running game may need to flare toward the outside. Shackelford is completely healthy this season. In fact, Bowie is in much better physical shape to start the 2015 campaign. Read more from this preview in the midweek Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
