The Nocona High School volleyball team earned its second home sweep of the week, defeating Paradise by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 on Saturday.
Even with such a convincing win, head coach Tiffany Clay knows Nocona can play even better.
“We didn’t play as well as I would have liked, but a win is a win,” Clay said. “Regardless of our competition, we strive to be better.”
Nocona improved to 17-13 overall, and 4-1 in District 3A-9.
Paradise isn’t the same daunting team as was the case in years past because the Lady Panthers lost a chunk of players from the 2014 squad due to graduation.
In the opening set, Paradise was down 20-18 before Nocona won five of the final seven points – finishing off the first stanza on a Lady Panther attack error.
Nocona won the first five points of the second set as Sherese Price put down a couple of kills and Magye Fenoglio served up an ace.
The Lady Panthers sliced the Lady Indian lead to 13-12 before Nocona stretched out its lead again with several Price tips and a Chloey Hamilton ace serve.

Holliday tops Bowie in four games

The Bowie High School volleyball team suffered its second loss of the week, dropping a four-set match to homestanding Holliday by scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 on Saturday.
Bowie stands at 17-11, 2-3 in District 3A-9. Still, the Lady Rabbits hold the final playoff spot through five games because of a road win over Boyd.
Bowie head coach Jeanie Stark said the team played much better against Holliday than Nocona, but still missed 13 serves and had unforced errors which precluded the Lady Rabbits from possibly taking the fourth set.
The team played host to City View on Tuesday.
Addy Cook continues her exemplary play with 17 kills, 12 assists, 11 digs and an overall .316 attack percentage. Read more, and see complete district standings, in The Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

There were four age categories with five events to compete in for the young athletes.
Along with the best results in each event, at the end the overall best cowboy and cowgirl in each age division was awarded as well.
The lead line division, in which an adult helps the young competitors, saw Rylee Stewart win the first in poles, barrel racing and mystery event on her way to win top cowgirl.
Hattie Snow got the fastest time in the flags event and Lany Shupak got the fastest goat time. Riggin Bishop got named the top cowboy in the division.
In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
In the 9-12 age division, Sage Keck won the top cowgirl while Chisum Carpenter won the top cowboy. Keck got the fastest times in four of the five divisions. Only Layna Taylor getting the fastest goat time prevented her from winning in a clean sweep.
