CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: Skinner takes 12th at Reunion Run

Nocona High School’s Brayden Skinner earned a medal at the Decatur Reunion Run in Joe Wheeler Park on Saturday.
Skinner was 11th in a time of 17 minutes, 22.9 seconds.
Luis Rico recorded a 23rd-place finish in a time of 18:25. Dylan Parker was 46th (19:20). Nash Parker also ran for the Indians.
Prairie Valley also ran at the event, with Chase Edwards the top Bulldog in 74th (21:05) and Dakota McClain was one spot behind in 75th. Shane Roof, Lane Roof, Kaden Fleming, Kadin Ramsey and William Winkler also ran for the Bulldogs, who finished with 357 team points.
Forestburg’s Skyler Sandusky recorded a time of 19:55.
In the seventh-grade race, Landry McCasland earned a medal – taking third in a time of 13:16. Wyatt Guerin earned 19th and Hank Ulbig was 27th. Manuel Rico was 21st in the eighth-grade race (12:49) with Cooper Harris 51st and Samuel Martin in 55th.
Maria Hernandez received a medal for taking 10th in the varsity 3,200-meter race, clocking in at 12:46.
Crystal Duarte was 38th (13:51), Flor Gomez 51st, Daisy Ibarra 55th and Yesenia Duarte 62nd. Nocona was seventh among the 13 teams with counted scores, with 208 points.
Avery Hawthorne, Lexi Roof and Taylor Carter were 83rd, 87th and 99th, respectively, for Prairie Valley.
Gisel Hernandez took 21st and Trinity Franklin 27th in the junior varsity girls’ race. Kara Kirby ran for Forestburg, claiming 38th.
Saint Jo competes in Denison
Ashley Reyling recorded a time of 14:40, which was good enough for 16th in the varsity girls’ 3,200-meter race at the Denison Invitational on Saturday.
Caitlyn Holley was next among Lady Panther runners, taking 21st in a time of 15:08. Katrina Noble was 24th (15:23), Emily Haney 26th (16:04) and Destiny Diaz 29th (16:24).
Juan Sanchez was the lone Saint Jo boy to compete on varsity with a time of 19:31, which was good enough for 28th.
In the junior high division, Hunter Garrett earned a medal – taking 10th in a time of 13:11. Logan Morman was 26th and Owen David 43rd.
As for junior high girls, Paityn Holley was eighth in a time of 14:13. That was good enough for a medal. Kassidy Pittman also medaled in 15th (14:29). Traci Corley posted a career-best time of 16:09, in 36th. Tori Lardizable was 78th to round out the Lady Panther performances. Read more from this notebook in the mid-week Bowie News.

Langford coming back home

Nocona is welcoming back Coach Sandy Langford, former coach and alumnus for the Lady Indians, as its new volleyball head coach.
Langford comes back to Nocona after spending the past 11 years leading the Glen Rose volleyball program.
Her circumstances with her family allowed her to jump at the opportunity once she became aware the position at Nocona was available.
“My youngest graduated and is playing football at Midwestern (State University),” Langford said. “All of our family is here and I knew that Coach Kara (Lucherk) was leaving. We were eventually going to retire here. Our oldest son plays college football at West Texas A&M and we’ll be two hours closer to him as well.”
She again will lead the Lady Indians volleyball program, one that she led all the way to the state title game in 2011, which is the farthest the volleyball program has ever gone in its prestigious history.
Langford kept up that level of success during her 11 years at the bigger 4A Glen Rose. She won less than 20 games only twice during her time, winning her 500th career game back in 2023. Her teams were ranked among the top 10 in the state five times and Langford led Glen Rose to the state tournament in 2017, the best finish in program history.
With the Lady Indians also having its own string of success, appearing in back-to-back regional finals while finishing atop the district standings both years, Langford is excited to not just keep the success going, but shoot for the stars.
“We are not expecting anything less than a state championship,” Langford said.
She has stacked the non-district schedule with strong, state-ranked 3A and 4A teams as well as big tournaments that will test Nocona’s mettle early next season in the hopes it will prepare them for a long playoff run.

Two teams compete at state tourney

The Red River High School Bass Club competed this past weekend, May 31 – June 1, at the State Tournament on Lake Conroe for the two-day tournament.
Two of the teams from Montague County traveled south to try their best at the culmination of the year for the state title. Teams were able to pre-fish on Friday before the Saturday and Sunday competition. On Friday, there was a flipping contest for the youth and Cooper Johnson won third overall and won a $500 scholarship and an Academy gift card.
The club’s two teams who competed were Lane Smith/Colt Henry with boat captain Jimmy Smith. The team placed 63rd with a total of 16.22 pounds. The second team of Cooper Johnson/Corbyn Patton and boat captain Jayson Toerck placed 169th with a total weight of 2.29 pounds.
