CROSS COUNTRY: Those running Rabbits

For the Bowie High School cross country team, the Rabbit Run was a chance to put on a meet.
“I was very proud of how our girls competed,” said Bowie girls’ cross country coach Colby Davis-Pastusek.
“This was the toughest course we ran all year. I hope after running our course, next week at Kiwanis Park will seem a lot easier. This was the first meet for our girls to win this year, and it gives them a lot of confidence going into district.”
Colby Davis-Pastusek, and her husband, Jonathan, designed the course – and the Bowie boys and girls claimed meet championships.
For surrounding communities, the run provided a preview of coming attractions for next Wednesday’s District 1A-21 meet.
That’s because Twisted Oaks Golf Club will be the site of the event, and Bellevue, Saint Jo, Gold-Burg’s boys, Forestburg and Henrietta Midway tuned up for the race.
“It was a very tough course,” Forestburg head coach Steve Sandusky said, “but my kids liked it. I am proud of them all, and I’m looking forward to next week.”
Other coaches also lauded their teams’ performances at the Rabbit Run.
“I was proud of the way our kids ran,” Saint Jo head coach Kyle Sivadon said. “It was good to get a chance to run on the course that we will run on for district.”
Sivadon was proud of how Juan Sanchez and Katrina Noble provided leadership for the team.
“They have led by example and I want them to have memorable district, regional and state runs,” the coach added.
Bellevue coach Bryan Goehring said. “It was good for us to be able to have a chance to run on the district course. I thought Devon Cassetty ran well and posted a good time for her. The team as a whole ran well and we focused on picking up points to be in position to advance from district.”
On the boys’ side, Bowie was tops, with Bellevue second at 57 and Gold-Burg third (67). The Lady Rabbits compiled just 20 points, 26 fewer than District 3A-9 opponent Wichita Falls City View. Saint Jo was third with 62, 50 less than 1A-21 rival Bellevue.
Bowie will run next Thursday at the 3A-9 meet in Wichita Falls at the flat, yet twisted Kiwanis Park course.
Taylor Pigg from Bowie claimed the boys’ title in a time of 18 minutes, 17.88 seconds. Read more, and see complete team scores, in the weekend Bowie News.

Bowie basketball teams start their seasons
Jackrabbits
A day after football season ended and the Bowie boy’s basketball team played its first game of the season and is working towards a new goal this season.
The Jackrabbits lost that first game against Sanger on Nov. 9, 70-36 before bouncing back a few days later after some practice to beat Bridgeport on Nov. 12, 56-51.
Bowie comes into this season after falling just short of making the playoffs last season.
The team graduated two of its three double-digit scorers along with an experienced post player from its starting rotation last season.
Rayder Mann is the team’s most proven scorer from last season, but other players will be counted on to step up according to Coach Ryan Dykes, who enters his second season at Bowie.
“Rayder Mann and Bradly Horton will need to be the floor generals for us to be successful,” Dykes said. “Boston Farris will be counted on to be a productive player and Gaige Goodman will need to be a factor in the paint on both the offensive and defensive end.”
In the first game against Sanger, Mann led the team with 13 points while Goodman was second with eight points.
The offense was much better overall against Bridgeport. Horton had 15 points, Mann had 14 points and Farris had nine points as Bowie scored in double-digits in every quarter of the game.
Lady Rabbits
In the second week of the season the Bowie Lady Rabbits had up and down performances.
The Lady Rabbits lost at Bridgeport on Nov. 9, 68-30 but bounced back to win at home on Nov. 12 against Boyd 55-42.
Against Bridgeport, Bowie gave up too many three-pointers on defense as the Sissies made 12 in the game.
It was too much for the Lady Rabbits to keep up with.
Parker Riddle led the team with 14 points while Payton Holt was second with five points.
The offense was more successful overall and balanced against Boyd, pulling away in the second half. Hanna Bell led the team with 13 points while Holt was second with eight points and Lanie Moore had seven points.
