HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Critical district showdown for Bowie

Despite the fact Bowie suffered a cruel 56-19 loss to Brock this past Friday in District 4-3A-I action, there are some positives from the game.
Bowie scored 19 points against an Eagle defense that had yielded just 24 coming into the game.
The Jackrabbits amassed 310 yards. Carter Shackelford continued working himself back into a more prominent role in the offense with 50 rushing yards. They didn’t have any turnovers, committed just one penalty and went 4-for-6 on fourth-down conversions.
However, Brock was simply too good as the Eagles gained 10.12 yards per play thanks to Tyler Gray, Cooper Warren, Leddy French and Seth Boleman.
Now the attention turns to a Breckenridge team that doesn’t give up many points, just 127 through seven games. Both the Jackrabbits and Buckaroos approach this 4-3A-I game with identical 3-4 records.
“They have a physical front-seven, and they haven’t given up a bunch of points,” Bowie head coach Dylan Stark said.
Stark said it may be easier to pass the ball against Breckenridge than run with it, which could mean heavy work loads for wide receivers Jeffery Howard and Chase Hall and quarterback Trace Hardee (80-for-125, 992 yards, 10 passing touchdowns). Hardee also has 385 rushing yards.
Breckenridge is an old-school type of team, preferring to run more than throw.
“They run a flex-bone” the coach commented, “They like to run a lot of option football with blasts and through the middle of the line.”
Stark said he hopes Bowie will play with more energy, which could help the defense flourish. The Jackrabbits have been outscored 216-196, but that’s come against a tough schedule. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

Langford coming back home

Nocona is welcoming back Coach Sandy Langford, former coach and alumnus for the Lady Indians, as its new volleyball head coach.
Langford comes back to Nocona after spending the past 11 years leading the Glen Rose volleyball program.
Her circumstances with her family allowed her to jump at the opportunity once she became aware the position at Nocona was available.
“My youngest graduated and is playing football at Midwestern (State University),” Langford said. “All of our family is here and I knew that Coach Kara (Lucherk) was leaving. We were eventually going to retire here. Our oldest son plays college football at West Texas A&M and we’ll be two hours closer to him as well.”
She again will lead the Lady Indians volleyball program, one that she led all the way to the state title game in 2011, which is the farthest the volleyball program has ever gone in its prestigious history.
Langford kept up that level of success during her 11 years at the bigger 4A Glen Rose. She won less than 20 games only twice during her time, winning her 500th career game back in 2023. Her teams were ranked among the top 10 in the state five times and Langford led Glen Rose to the state tournament in 2017, the best finish in program history.
With the Lady Indians also having its own string of success, appearing in back-to-back regional finals while finishing atop the district standings both years, Langford is excited to not just keep the success going, but shoot for the stars.
“We are not expecting anything less than a state championship,” Langford said.
She has stacked the non-district schedule with strong, state-ranked 3A and 4A teams as well as big tournaments that will test Nocona’s mettle early next season in the hopes it will prepare them for a long playoff run.
