For the second straight year, the Bowie High School girls’ basketball team finished second in the Fantasy of Lights Tournament at Wichita Falls.
Wichita Falls Rider, for the second time last week, defeated Bowie for the title. The Jackrabbits played a much more competitive game this time around.
The game featured fifth-ranked Conference 5A Rider (11-1) and sixth-ranked Conference 3A Bowie (5-2).
“Rider tried to go big on us the first time we played,” Bowie head coach Colby Davis-Pastusek said. “We went with two post players and matched up so much better.
“In the first game at Rider, we allowed 18 offensive rebounds, so controlling the boards was a big point of emphasis when we played them in the championship game.”
Madison Hill started for Bowie, along with Addy Cook in the front court. The Lady Rabbits culled 23 rebounds this time, four more caroms than the game at Rider on Nov. 24. They also didn’t allow Rider as many boards this go round.
Still, Rider had too much firepower as Mercedes Brooks tossed in a game-high 30 points and Corbri Wingfield added 12.
Bowie attempted to counter with strong perimeter shooting. The Lady Rabbits made 31 percent of their shots in this game versus Rider, as opposed to 27 percent on Nov. 24. Read more, and see the complete box score, in the mid-week Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
In the 9-12 age division, Sage Keck won the top cowgirl while Chisum Carpenter won the top cowboy. Keck got the fastest times in four of the five divisions. Only Layna Taylor getting the fastest goat time prevented her from winning in a clean sweep.
