FISHING: Hopson reels in lone fish to meet standard

Bowie High School’s Lane Hopson was a solo angler during the Lake Ray Hubbard fishing tournament at Bass Pro Shops in Garland this past weekend.
Hopson caught one fish weighing slightly more than one pound – and that should help keep Hadley Morgan and him in contention for angler of the year in the Texas High School Bass Association standings.
That was Bowie’s lone bright spot.
“We were able to catch some fish, but some of the largemouth bass we caught were too small to weigh,” said Bowie Bass Club team coordinator Trent Gillaspia.
Like before the Lake Ray Roberts tournament one month ago, a cold front went through just before the competition.
That could have been a factor keeping the fish from biting on the lure; but, that wasn’t the only hindrance.
“We were not familiar with the lake, and none of the captains fished it before,” Gillaspia said.
Gillaspia said Bowie wasn’t the only school that had trouble fishing that day, and many two-person teams came up empty. Read more in the April 13 Bowie News.
