HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Cap the Chaps?

The Bowie High School football team will face an old-school offense this Friday when Aubrey visits Jackrabbit Stadium.
Aubrey, under head coach Keith Ivy, will run a Wing-T – which dates back to the 1940s under Delaware coaches David Nelson and Tubby Raymond.
In the Wing-T, the quarterback and fullback form an “I” with a pair of wing backs – including one lining up diagonally from the tight end.
“We’ll have to read our keys,” Bowie head coach Dylan Stark said. “We’ve been working on it in practice, and I think we will play well. I’m excited to see how we will do against it.”
The Wing-T is predicated on both options and misdirection, and that puts pressure on linebackers to perform. L.B. Clement will pilot the Jackrabbit defense, coming off a season in which he recorded 95 tackles.
Aubrey will run a 4-3 defense, something which Stark said the Jackrabbit offense is capable of handling.
Bowie scored more than 400 points last season; but, the Jackrabbits will be using a third-string quarterback on Friday. There are several possibilities that could play quarterback Friday – including Brandon Hutto, Gary Mosley and Dustin VanWey.

Other county games

Alvord at Nocona

Alvord has a new offensive coordinator in Danny Nabors, the former coach at Paradise. The Bulldogs have transitioned to more of a spread team.

Forestburg at Notre Dame

This six-man contest in Wichita Falls will be between an area finalist in University Interscholastic League Division II and private school Division II state runner-up.

Benjamin at Gold-Burg

Gold-Burg head coach Jay Johnson reported seven boys will suit up for Friday night’s game versus Benjamin. The Mustangs were a playoff qualifier last season; but, Benjamin exited early after a loss to Forestburg at Vernon Northside.

Saturday’s game

At Blanket

Saint Jo vs. Nueces Canyon

The Saint Jo football team will participate in a “Six-Man Showcase” game at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday versus Barksdale Nueces Canyon at Blanket. Saint Jo head coach Chad Tallon said Nueces Canyon is going through what Saint Jo did about a decade ago – transitioning from 11- to six-man football.

The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
