Kathy Phillips, clerk in the Montague County Tax Assessor’s office, has been appointed to fill out the remaining term for Syd Nowell, when she retires on April 1.
Nowell has served as tax assessor since September 1999. She submitted her resignation to the commissioner’s court Monday as she plans to retire. It was not a surprise as Nowell told the court it was pending as they prepared the 2018-19 budget, which includes provisions to pay for a person to train for about a month before Nowell leaves.
Phillips, who resides in Bowie, has been a clerk in the tax offices for the past two years. Nowell recommended her for the job, along with the committee appointed by the court to consider a replacement. The elected job opens with the March 2020 party primary when a new nominee will be elected and then sent forward to the general election.
