Jackrabbits host first tournament

Playing through a freezing couple of days, the Bowie baseball team hosted its first tournament last week.
Against good competition the Jackrabbits went 1-3 in their first extended action this season.
Bowie started with Peaster on Thursday. It was a low scoring, pitchers duel with few hits from either team, so they had to get creative.
The Greyhounds got two base runners on with one out thanks to a hit batter and a drawn walk. A wild pitch scored the first run of the game before Peaster drove in the other base runner to go up 2-0 in the top of the third inning.
Bowie scored in the bottom of the fifth inning with Boo Oakley scoring from third base thanks to a fielding error with two outs that cut the lead to 2-1. Unfortunately, the Jackrabbits could not break through as they ended up losing by that score.
Bowie’s next game was against Covenant Christian. The Cougars were able to strike in the first inning with back-to-back doubles that scored two runs. Covenant Christina added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The Jackrabbits offense finally got something going in the final inning as Ryan Henson drove in Braden Armstrong to cut the lead to 4-1. Bowie was able to load the bases with a dropped third strike and a drawn walk, but the next batter popped out to third base to end the game.
On Friday the Jackrabbits played Muenster. After scoring two runs total the previous day, Bowie went over that total in the bottom of the second inning. Henson drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. With the bases loaded, the Jackrabbits had back-to-back hit batters that drove in two more runs to go up 3-0.
The Hornets drove in a run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-1. It was not until the bottom of the fifth inning when Bowie extended its lead. Ozzie Phillips drew a walk and after stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Payton Price drove him in with a single to make the score 4-1.
Muenster was able to get that run back in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-2 before heading into the final inning. Thanks to two singles and a triple, the Hornets were able to score two runs to tie the score 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Phillips was able to get on base with a one out single. Bowie could not advance him into scoring position with either a steal or the next batter as they lined out to second base. With two outs Armstrong came through with a double to left field. Running from first, Phillips was able to score as the Jackrabbits won 5-4.

Langford coming back home

Nocona is welcoming back Coach Sandy Langford, former coach and alumnus for the Lady Indians, as its new volleyball head coach.
Langford comes back to Nocona after spending the past 11 years leading the Glen Rose volleyball program.
Her circumstances with her family allowed her to jump at the opportunity once she became aware the position at Nocona was available.
“My youngest graduated and is playing football at Midwestern (State University),” Langford said. “All of our family is here and I knew that Coach Kara (Lucherk) was leaving. We were eventually going to retire here. Our oldest son plays college football at West Texas A&M and we’ll be two hours closer to him as well.”
She again will lead the Lady Indians volleyball program, one that she led all the way to the state title game in 2011, which is the farthest the volleyball program has ever gone in its prestigious history.
Langford kept up that level of success during her 11 years at the bigger 4A Glen Rose. She won less than 20 games only twice during her time, winning her 500th career game back in 2023. Her teams were ranked among the top 10 in the state five times and Langford led Glen Rose to the state tournament in 2017, the best finish in program history.
With the Lady Indians also having its own string of success, appearing in back-to-back regional finals while finishing atop the district standings both years, Langford is excited to not just keep the success going, but shoot for the stars.
“We are not expecting anything less than a state championship,” Langford said.
She has stacked the non-district schedule with strong, state-ranked 3A and 4A teams as well as big tournaments that will test Nocona’s mettle early next season in the hopes it will prepare them for a long playoff run.
