Bowie High School’s Winter Guard members are spinning their way through competition season as they work toward qualifying for the championships on March 7.
Assistant Bowie Band Director Melissa Zamzow is in her second year as the full-time director of the Winter Guard which brings dance and flag spins to a new level of competition from the traditional band flag corps.
While color or flag corps generally use flags or sabers, along with costumes and dance to bring new facets to marching band, the winter guard enhances all those facets as a team of performers for a show inside of a gymnasium. Winter guard tells a story set to music, using lots of theatrics, costuming, props, backdrops and of course flags.
A team must have at least five performers and a maximum of 30. This year’s team is nine who have experience spinning range from none to very. While the majority are in band, it is not a requirement.
