Bowie girls have two lift at state meet

Bowie senior powerlifters Jordan Vaught and Kinley Russell competed at the girl’s state powerlifting meet on Thursday at Frisco.
Competing in the 3A Division I field, Vaught earned a medal and finished fourth in her weight class while Russell finished eighth in the final meet of the senior’s careers.
Coming into the state meet, both had previous experience competing at the highest level, having qualified for state in 2022 and 2023. Neither had come home with a medal as Russell finished eighth and sixth and Vought placed 13th both years.
An extra challenge this year compared to the previous two seasons is both were competing in a higher weight class. Russell moved up to 148 from 132 and Vaught moved up to 242 from 220.
Everyone wants to perform their best at state and thankfully both girls can say they did that. Vaught improved her squat and bench presses by five pounds each to 370 and 230 and equaled her best deadlift of 340. Her 940 total was the best of her career.
It was 25 pounds more than fifth place and good enough to earn her a medal.
“While players may be separated from their plays, powerlifters cannot be separated from their lifts,” Vaught said. “Every lift is a direct representation of our hard work and time. Ultimately, there’s not much I would consider more impactful than my time powerlifting.”
For Russell, she improved her deadlift by five pounds to 290 and equaled her highest lifts on squat (330) and bench (185). Her 805 total placed her in eighth place, but was only 25 pounds away from medal contention.
“Powerlifting is the definition of good sportsmanship and has allowed me to spread a positive light toward my competitors while still having a competitive edge and pushing myself,” Russell said. “I have faced adversity, overcome and benefited from powerlifting in more ways than I could’ve imagined from my freshman to senior year.”

Langford coming back home

Nocona is welcoming back Coach Sandy Langford, former coach and alumnus for the Lady Indians, as its new volleyball head coach.
Langford comes back to Nocona after spending the past 11 years leading the Glen Rose volleyball program.
Her circumstances with her family allowed her to jump at the opportunity once she became aware the position at Nocona was available.
“My youngest graduated and is playing football at Midwestern (State University),” Langford said. “All of our family is here and I knew that Coach Kara (Lucherk) was leaving. We were eventually going to retire here. Our oldest son plays college football at West Texas A&M and we’ll be two hours closer to him as well.”
She again will lead the Lady Indians volleyball program, one that she led all the way to the state title game in 2011, which is the farthest the volleyball program has ever gone in its prestigious history.
Langford kept up that level of success during her 11 years at the bigger 4A Glen Rose. She won less than 20 games only twice during her time, winning her 500th career game back in 2023. Her teams were ranked among the top 10 in the state five times and Langford led Glen Rose to the state tournament in 2017, the best finish in program history.
With the Lady Indians also having its own string of success, appearing in back-to-back regional finals while finishing atop the district standings both years, Langford is excited to not just keep the success going, but shoot for the stars.
“We are not expecting anything less than a state championship,” Langford said.
She has stacked the non-district schedule with strong, state-ranked 3A and 4A teams as well as big tournaments that will test Nocona’s mettle early next season in the hopes it will prepare them for a long playoff run.
