The Forestburg Longhorns won both of their playoff games last week to continue their season.
The Longhorns won in blowouts against Newcastle (64-38) and Avery (73-36) in the bi-district and area rounds.
Forestburg came into the playoffs confident after winning its first district title since 2009 and only losing one during district play.
The Longhorns were first matched up with a Newcastle team that came in with only nine wins on the season and had to scrape and claw and win a play-in game to get into the playoffs.
Last year the teams met in the same round, but it had been a much closer game which Forestburg had won. This year, with the game played on Feb. 18, the Longhorns won with little trouble.
The first half was competitive as Forestburg nursed a 26-19 lead at halftime. The second half saw the Longhorns offense get rolling, scoring 20 points in the third quarter and 18 in the fourth quarter.
Newcastle could not keep up as the Longhorns won 64-38.
Jesus Sanchez led the team with 24 points while Josiah Wadsworth was second with 15 and Kyler Willett adding 10 points.
Coach Curtis Enis thought his team’s defense got better and better as the game wore on which he singled out as the key reason the team won the game.
The win moved the Longhorns on to play an Avery team that had much higher accolades. The Bulldogs won their district’s championship with only one loss and had 24 wins on the season.
Despite that, Forestburg came out scorching hot, scoring the ball well and forcing turnovers on offense as it led 28-6 after the first quarter.
The Longhorns could not keep up that offensive pace all game and came back down to earth in the second quarter, actually being outscored 13-9.
Still, because the first quarter explosion Forestburg’s lead was still sizable at halftime 37-19, but the Longhorns did not want to give Avery any hope it could come back.
The third quarter saw Forestburg’s offense get back into rhythm in the third quarter, scoring 23 points to extend its lead before being able to slow things down in the fourth quarter.
The Longhorns won by more than twice the Bulldogs score 73-36.
Sanchez again led the team with 24 points. Jesse Wadsworth was second with 19 points and Willett scored 14 points.

Langford coming back home

Nocona is welcoming back Coach Sandy Langford, former coach and alumnus for the Lady Indians, as its new volleyball head coach.
Langford comes back to Nocona after spending the past 11 years leading the Glen Rose volleyball program.
Her circumstances with her family allowed her to jump at the opportunity once she became aware the position at Nocona was available.
“My youngest graduated and is playing football at Midwestern (State University),” Langford said. “All of our family is here and I knew that Coach Kara (Lucherk) was leaving. We were eventually going to retire here. Our oldest son plays college football at West Texas A&M and we’ll be two hours closer to him as well.”
She again will lead the Lady Indians volleyball program, one that she led all the way to the state title game in 2011, which is the farthest the volleyball program has ever gone in its prestigious history.
Langford kept up that level of success during her 11 years at the bigger 4A Glen Rose. She won less than 20 games only twice during her time, winning her 500th career game back in 2023. Her teams were ranked among the top 10 in the state five times and Langford led Glen Rose to the state tournament in 2017, the best finish in program history.
With the Lady Indians also having its own string of success, appearing in back-to-back regional finals while finishing atop the district standings both years, Langford is excited to not just keep the success going, but shoot for the stars.
“We are not expecting anything less than a state championship,” Langford said.
She has stacked the non-district schedule with strong, state-ranked 3A and 4A teams as well as big tournaments that will test Nocona’s mettle early next season in the hopes it will prepare them for a long playoff run.
