District track has big winners

Last week all area schools competed in their district track meets to see who would move on to the area meet.
Bowie competed in the 3A meet at Iowa Park, Nocona competed at the 2A meet in Petrolia and all of the area 1A schools competed at Bowie.
For athletes or relay teams to qualify for area meet, they must have finished in the top four in their event. It would take up too much room to list every single athlete who qualified for area, so compare with the results listed at the end to see who went through.
The Bowie boy’s team finished third overall while the Lady Rabbits team got seventh overall. The athlete who won their event was Tyler Richey in the pole vault event.
For Nocona, the boy’s team reported finishing third overall and the girl’s team finished fourth overall. Athletes who won their event included Gracie Brown winning the 200 and 400 meter races, Ava Johnson winning the 100 meters, Kyle Waters winning the 400 meter race and the girl 4×400 relay team winning first overall.
The 1A meet saw both Saint Jo teams win the district title. Girl athletes who won their events included Savannah Hill in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, Maxey Johnson in the shot put, Bryndle Brewer in the 400 meters and all three relay teams.
The boy athletes who won their events were Damon Byrd in the 100 meters, long and triple jump, Lee Yeley in the 200 meters and high jump, Barrett Johnson in the 400 meters, Jayden Curry in the 1600 and 3200 meter races, Trent Gaston in the 110 meter hurdles, Devin Stewart in the 300 meter hurdles and the 4×200 and 4×400 meter relay teams.
The Gold-Burg boy’s team finished second overall while the girls team got sixth place. The Bears who finished first place in their events were the boy’s 4×100 relay team and Eli White-Freeland who won the discus.
The Bellevue Lady Eagles team finished second overall while the boy’s team got sixth place. Individual highlights included Mattie Broussard winning the 3200, 1600 and 800 meter races while Mary Grace Broussard won the long jump.
The Forestburg boy’s team got third place while the Lady Horns team got fourth place. Athletes who won their events included Brenna Briles in the 100 meter, 200 meter, high jump and triple jump, Jesse Wadsworth in the 800 meters and Jesus Sanchez in the shot put.
Both Prairie Valley teams got fifth place overall and the athlete who won their event was Josh Stout in the pole vault.

Langford coming back home

Nocona is welcoming back Coach Sandy Langford, former coach and alumnus for the Lady Indians, as its new volleyball head coach.
Langford comes back to Nocona after spending the past 11 years leading the Glen Rose volleyball program.
Her circumstances with her family allowed her to jump at the opportunity once she became aware the position at Nocona was available.
“My youngest graduated and is playing football at Midwestern (State University),” Langford said. “All of our family is here and I knew that Coach Kara (Lucherk) was leaving. We were eventually going to retire here. Our oldest son plays college football at West Texas A&M and we’ll be two hours closer to him as well.”
She again will lead the Lady Indians volleyball program, one that she led all the way to the state title game in 2011, which is the farthest the volleyball program has ever gone in its prestigious history.
Langford kept up that level of success during her 11 years at the bigger 4A Glen Rose. She won less than 20 games only twice during her time, winning her 500th career game back in 2023. Her teams were ranked among the top 10 in the state five times and Langford led Glen Rose to the state tournament in 2017, the best finish in program history.
With the Lady Indians also having its own string of success, appearing in back-to-back regional finals while finishing atop the district standings both years, Langford is excited to not just keep the success going, but shoot for the stars.
“We are not expecting anything less than a state championship,” Langford said.
She has stacked the non-district schedule with strong, state-ranked 3A and 4A teams as well as big tournaments that will test Nocona’s mettle early next season in the hopes it will prepare them for a long playoff run.
