Ricky Howard, Nocona, entered guilty pleas on three separate unlawful possession of a firearms charges in a hearing today receiving five years on each case, which will run concurrent.

A hearing was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday for one of the unlawful possession cases, however, the hearing never opened as Howard’s attorney Robert Estrada asked to meet with District Attorney Paige Williams and then met with his attorney. At 11 a.m. the bench trial opened before 97th District Court Judge Jack McGaughey.

Due to his conviction on federal bank fraud charges back in 2007 where Howard was sentenced to 46 months in prison, he cannot legally possess any firearms. He was arrested in May 2015 on three separate instances where he allegedly had firearms in his possession. Howard has been a person of interest in the Caleb Diehl disappearance. It was during the midst of questioning and executing search warrants in connection with the missing 18-year-old that officers discovered the guns and an instance of him shooting on a friend’s gun range.

In December 2015 the Nocona man was arrested on two complaints of aggravated sexual assault of a child stemming from incidents alleged from 1996 through 2000 to a male child who was 13 years old when they started. A second arrested was made on Jan. 12, 2016 by a second male victim who was 12 at the time of the allegations that went back to 1994.

Groves’ family named top yard

Published

Congratulations to Leighton and Stephanie Groves, 1510 N. Matthews, the first spring winner of Yard of the Month for April.
The couple has put a lot of work into the property in which they moved in November 2021. Leighton says his wife has the “green thumb,” but they share the work to do it all about 50/50. Along with a lovely front porch and yard, the family has created a cute cottage garden in the back yard full of flowers, vegetables and herbs in raised beds, anchored by a picnic table with lights all surrounded by a picket fence to keep out their two large dogs, two geese and a bevy of chickens.
There were two yards in the city limits that were nominated including the winner and 800 Bennett. Two more were submitted, but were located outside the city limit.
The opening month has been hard on residences with lots of rain and sunshine making it hard to keep up with the mowing. As the season settles down The Bowie News hopes to see more lawn submissions. There will be winners named for May and June.
The winner will be published in the last paper of the month. Call 872-2247 to make a nomination or email it to [email protected]. If you email follow up with a phone call to make sure it arrives. Deadline will be May 24.
