Burn ban runs out on March 11

Despite nearly six inches of rain, snow and ice across the area during February, Montague County still has a few days left for the ban on outdoor burning.
Unless the burn ban is extended by the Montague County Commissioner’s Court, the ban runs out on March 11.
While the ground may be soggy, there is plenty of fuel in the form of dry leaves, downed branches and other foliage that only needs a brisk March wind to dry it out and make kindling for a fire. Those wet conditions also make fighting fire difficult for fire departments as they attempt to go into muddy pastures to get to a blaze and get stuck – a dangerous instance for firefighter and vehicle.
The sheriff’s office has been issuing tickets for burn ban violators and Sheriff Marshall Thomas said he has a zero tolerance and deputies will issue tickets.
