Mighty Marching Maroon has tough UIL marching contest

The University Interscholastic League Region 5 competition did not go as well as the Mighty Marching Maroon hoped as an incident on the field left them coming home with all threes on Saturday.
“We didn’t do well at all and ended up getting all threes. We had seven kids fall down,” explained Bowie Band Director Kendel Hickenbottom. “It was a situation where one was going too fast, tripped and fell, causing the next to trip.”
The incident ended with one student taken to the hospital by ambulance, but Hickenbottom reports she was back at school on Monday.
“She wasn’t the first who tripped, but she had been sick and tried to make the competition and when others fell on her it was too much,” said the band director.
The band remained professional and continued to perform as the director carried the student off the field.
“They finished as I was bringing her off and we found out how severe the situation was and the ambulance was called,” said Hickenbottom.
The judges were not sympathetic to the situation, as the band was informed their music was too hard and the marching was too difficult.
