Fire destroys home late Friday night

A home near Lake Amon Carter was destroyed by fire late Friday night with firefighters from Bowie Rural Fire Department, City of Bowie, Sunset and Stoneburg Fire Departments all responding around 12:30 a.m.
Fire Chief Randall Preuninger said the homeowner, Robert Stevens, was awakened by the smoke detector and when he went to the door to the room and opened it, he saw the house was burning.
The home, located at 144 Oak Ridge Street, about seven miles out of Bowie, was destroyed by the fire along with a Stevens’ shop.
The fire departments cleared the scene around 4:30 p.m. The chief said Sunday there was no determination on the cause of the fire.
“It was a complete loss and the roof caved in so we could not go in to get a good look,” said Preuninger.
