Forestburg opens on road at Tioga

Forestburg High School Football Coach Wayne Tuckwell is smart when it comes to the Longhorns’ schedule.
Why? Because Forestburg’s bye week comes right before Conference 1A Division II District 12 play.
On Oct. 10, the Longhorns travel to Harrold for its final non-district game, then their bye arrives.
“Yes, I did it for a reason,” Tuckwell said. “I wanted a week off in case we had any injuries, and get those taken care of.”
In addition, it gives the Longhorns extra time to prepare for the district opener against Montague County rival Gold-Burg, now coached by former Forestburg hand Jay Johnson.
Tuckwell said the game will be a study in contrast with the experienced Bears and the up-and-coming Longhorns.
Woodson and venerable powerhouse Throckmorton also comprise 12-1A. Tuckwell said Throckmorton is a worthy replacement for Newcastle, another strong area 6-man program.
In recent years, Woodson has fallen on hard times. The Cowboys dressed as few as seven players for a game last season.
Shane Mallory takes over as the new boss in Throckmorton, which features bruising 6-foot-6, 225-pound wide receiver Hayden Farquhar.
The non-district schedule features the annual game against 6-Man Division I Saint Jo on Oct. 3. Tuckwell was the Panthers’ offensive coordinator for several years. Read more in the mid-week edition of The Bowie News.
