SPORTS BRIEFS: BHS offers fall tennis
Bowie High School will have its fall tennis program once again this year under head coach David Hall.
Fall tennis will begin the first day of school on Aug. 25, and will finish in the middle of October. Jackrabbit tennis players are urged to begin conditioning now.
The primary purpose of fall tennis is to practice and improve for the upcoming spring 2015 season.
Signing up for fall tennis isn’t mandatory, but athletes that do show up are “committing to practice after school for the allotted time frame,” according to a press release.
Practice will take place from 3:45-5 p.m. at the high school tennis courts on campus grounds.
To practice, athletes must have passed a physical and completed a battery of both University Interscholastic League and Bowie Independent School District forms.
For information, call Hall at 940-531-0077.
Fishing tackle is available
The Wichita Falls Texas Parks and Wildlife Department office is offering free loans of fishing tackle for those who need it.
The equipment is designed for family members to take children fishing, but the gear is open to anyone.
For information, call 940-766-2383.
Hunter safety course Aug. 23
Copper Breaks State Park in Quanah will offer the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department-approved hunter safety course at 9 a.m. on Aug. 23.
Wendell Barberee, Copper Breaks State Park ranger, will serve as the instructor.
The course is required by law for all hunters born after Sept. 2, 1971.
Proof of course completion must accompany the licenses.
Participation is by reservation only. Younger hunters should be accompanied by an adult.
The cost is $15, and payment is nonrefundable. The park admission fee is $2 for adults, but waived for course participants.
Copper Breaks is within driving distance of Bowie, 13 miles south of Quanah and eight miles north of Crowell on Texas Highway 6.
For more information, call Barberee at 940-839-4331.
