Workman Watch: August 13 edition

Published

on

Former Bowie High School and current Boston Red Sox pitcher Brandon Workman was pressed into service during a marathon, 19-inning baseball game on Saturday at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, Calif.
Workman was brought in for the bottom of the 19th, and he faced Angels’ slugger Albert Pujols.
Six pitches later, Pujols deposited a Workman pitch over the fence in right centerfield, an opposite-field home run to give the Angels a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox.
“As hard-fought as we played this game, as did they, sometimes these extended games when you come out on the short end can feel like two losses,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell to MLB.com’s Quinn Roberts after the game.
Both teams scored once during the 14th inning, which ultimately set up Pujols’ dramatics. The Angels knotted the game at 3-all with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Despite pitching Saturday night, it is expected Workman will make his scheduled start at 6 p.m. tonight against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark.
Workman’s record dropped to 1-6 at the major league level, the complete opposite of his 6-1 mark at the Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate, the Pawtucket (R.I.) PawSox.
Overall, Workman’s earned-run average is 4.45 and he’s allowed nine major-league home runs this year. Brandon has made 10 starts and pitched in 14 games, throwing 62-2/3 innings. He’s surrendered 36 runs (31 earned) on 54 hits while striking out 48 and walking 25.
The Reds will counter Workman was seasoned veteran Homer Bailey in this battle of right-handers. This will mark Workman’s first-ever career start against Cincinnati.

Bowie, Nocona compete in VB scrimmages

Published

Nocona’s volleyball team headed to Bowie for a three-team scrimmage with the host team and Ponder Aug. 7.

Each team played the other two for 30 minutes in the Lady Rabbit gym. Lady Indian Coach Sandy Langford said she thought things went well for a first scrimmage.

“Just like any young team that is trying to find itself in a first scrimmage, We looked really good at times and at others not so much,” Langford said. “We’re forming a new team after losing a lot of seniors.”

Langford said the squad would have one thing go wrong and it would explode into several things. That will need to stop for a successful year in Langford’s mind.
