AREA BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Bowie boys knock out Holliday by 10

The Bowie High School boys’ basketball team held Holliday to single-digit scoring in the second, third and fourth quarters for a 39-29 District 3A-9 victory on Tuesday.
Bowie sent Holliday to its second loss in the school’s new gymnasium.
This was a “Pink Out” game for breast cancer awareness.
Jeffery Howard and Chase Hall combined for more than 75 percent of the Jackrabbits’ points, with Howard netting 19. Howard canned three 3-pointers as part of his scoring barrage and he helped out on the defensive end with four steals.
The teams combined for just 15 free throws.
Hall snared a Bowie-best 11 rebounds and he dished off four assists.

Individual scorers: Chase Hall, 11; Jeffery Howard, 19; Zeke Vaughan, 3; Kamry Weber, 6
Additional statistics: Bowie connected on just 33 percent of its shots at 15-for-46 attempts. Seven of Hall’s 11 rebounds were on the offensive glass. Bowie had 24 rebounds in all.

Bowie 75, Holliday 20
The beat and the beat down continued on Tuesday night as the Conference 3A 13th-ranked Bowie girls trounced Holliday 75-20 on the road this past Tuesday.
Courtney Brady paced the Lady Rabbits with 22 points including a sparkling 9-of-14 from the field.
Bowie finished the game with an 18-6 in free-throw attempts.
The Lady Rabbits didn’t allow Holliday to score more than seven points in any given quarter and the stingy defense held the Lady Eagles to a terrible 8-of-35 field-goal shooting (23 percent).
Jordan Brightwell, Addy Cook and Brittney Pound also scored in double figures for the maroon-clad girls with 15, 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Additional statistics: Both Brightwell and Pound collected five rebounds. The Rabbits made an astounding 30-of-46 field goals (65 percent), including 28-of-39 from inside 2-point land. Brady also dished off five assists. Cook played stellar defense with seven pass deflections and five steals.
Record: Bowie 23-5, 10-0

World gets ready for 2024 Summer Olympics

The 2024 Summer Olympics is just a few weeks away taking place in Paris. The opening ceremonies will be July 26 and are planned to be unique as they take place along the Seine River that flows through Paris. Thomas Bach prepared this op-ed to welcome the world to Paris.

The Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 is only days away. The excitement gripping this nation is palpable.
As this unique festival of sport draws closer, we all are feeling that France and the French people are ready to welcome the world’s best athletes with the hospitality and passion for sport for which they are famous all around the world.
Already millions of people have greeted the Olympic flame on its journey around France with a huge wave of enthusiasm. All of us are looking forward to an unforgettable celebration of Olympic sport and French culture in the coming weeks.

Firecracker 5K welcomes 100 runners on July 4th

Saint Jo’s Firecracker 5K welcomed 100 runners for its 16th year on July 4th.
According to runsignup.com, Old Jo’s Firecracker 5K saw 100 runners of all ages register to kick off in downtown Saint Jo.
Brayden Willett, 14, Nocona, was the top male finisher with a time of 19:02.6. Sarah Rainey, 35, Saint Jo, was the top female finisher with 21:47.1.
In the male nine and under division, I. Miller, nine, Muenster, repeated his first place win from 2023 with at time of 34:52.8. E. Thomas, eight, no town listed, also repeated her win with a time of 31:58.5.
Emry Raney-Cavnar, 14, Ardmore, OK, won the male 10-14 group and E. Christensen, 11, Decatur, took the female race. In the male 15-19 division Luke Gehrig, 17, Muenster, won, while Sophia Christensen, 15, Decatur, took the ladies’ title.
