MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Could Red Sox trade Workman?

Published

on

The major league baseball trade deadline is coming on Aug. 1, and the Boston Red Sox have been rumored to add another relief pitcher.
If Boston adds another reliever, how would that affect former Bowie standout Brandon Workman? Would be subject to a trade?
According to reports on WEEI radio reporter Rob Bradford, the Red Sox are “keeping an eye on the Pat Neshek market.”
Neshek is currently pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies, and he threw a scoreless inning of relief for the National League in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Miami.
The Red Sox currently sport the third-best bullpen earned-run average in baseball; but, Bradford reported Boston may still be looking for more reliability in the seventh and eighth innings.
Joe Kelly has been shaky in recent weeks, and that has made closer Craig Kimbrel’s job more difficult.
Would the Phillies ask for Workman back in return for the side-winder Neshek? That remains a distinct possibility. Workman was originally drafted in the ninth round by the Phillies in 2007.
Workman has produced a strong season for the Triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.) Paw Sox.
Recently on July 5, Workman earned his fourth win of the season as the Paw Sox defeated Rochester 2-0. Brandon pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while both walking and striking out three. He threw 42 pitches, with 23 of them strikes.
On July 9, just before the All-Star break, Workman pitched 2/3rds of an inning, striking out both batters he faced as Pawtucket beat Buffalo 2-1 in an 11-inning contest. Seven of the 11 pitches Brandon threw were for strikes.
Workman is now 4-1 on the season, with a stellar 1.61 earned-run average. Brandon has pitched in 17 games with two saves, 34 strikeouts and just 13 walks. He has allowed six runs (five earned) on 16 hits in 28 innings of work.
Overall, the Red Sox have called up Workman three times this season, and Workman’s thrown primarily mop-up innings in two blowout losses. Read more in the July 15 Bowie News.

Langford coming back home

Nocona is welcoming back Coach Sandy Langford, former coach and alumnus for the Lady Indians, as its new volleyball head coach.
Langford comes back to Nocona after spending the past 11 years leading the Glen Rose volleyball program.
Her circumstances with her family allowed her to jump at the opportunity once she became aware the position at Nocona was available.
“My youngest graduated and is playing football at Midwestern (State University),” Langford said. “All of our family is here and I knew that Coach Kara (Lucherk) was leaving. We were eventually going to retire here. Our oldest son plays college football at West Texas A&M and we’ll be two hours closer to him as well.”
She again will lead the Lady Indians volleyball program, one that she led all the way to the state title game in 2011, which is the farthest the volleyball program has ever gone in its prestigious history.
Langford kept up that level of success during her 11 years at the bigger 4A Glen Rose. She won less than 20 games only twice during her time, winning her 500th career game back in 2023. Her teams were ranked among the top 10 in the state five times and Langford led Glen Rose to the state tournament in 2017, the best finish in program history.
With the Lady Indians also having its own string of success, appearing in back-to-back regional finals while finishing atop the district standings both years, Langford is excited to not just keep the success going, but shoot for the stars.
“We are not expecting anything less than a state championship,” Langford said.
She has stacked the non-district schedule with strong, state-ranked 3A and 4A teams as well as big tournaments that will test Nocona’s mettle early next season in the hopes it will prepare them for a long playoff run.
