Nocona, Prairie Valley golf teams win district titles

The local 1A schools and Nocona competed at their district golf tournaments last week, with Nocona finishing up earlier this week due to weather, at the local Indian Oaks Golf Course.
Both Prairie Valley teams won the 1A tournament while the Nocona Lady Indian team finished first in the 2A tournament and the boy’s team got third place.
The Lady Indians total score was 482 and they were led by Jessie Howard who shot 111. Paige Davis (115), Avery Crutsinger (126) and Heidi Atteberry (129) also added to the team’s total. Alexa Sosa’s score of 130 just missed the top four cut while Estella Womble shot 140.
The Nocona boy’s team third place finish just missed the cut of qualifying for the regional tournament. The Indians shot 357, with Landon Fatheree leading the team shooting 82. Jake Pribble and Kutter Cabrera both shot 90 while Jentry Miller shot 95 to round out the team’s total score. Caleb Cavallaro’s 114 score did not go into the team’s total.
The Prairie Valley Lady Bulldogs team got first place shooting 476 and were led by Linzie Priddy who shot 100. Avaree Woodyard (110), Abbie Pepper (128) and Kiley McCracken (138) added to the team’s total. Maloree Woodyard shot 146, but it was not included in the team’s total.
The Prairie Valley boy’s team got first place and shot 428, led by Dayne Sadler who shot 83. The Bulldogs also had Sawyer Bray (106), Case Carpenter (116 and Jarrett Horton (123) add to the team total. James Wells shot 126, but it was not included in the team’s total.
The Gold-Burg boy’s team was the only other 1A team to qualify for the regional tournament, finishing second overall with a score of 454, edging out Saint Jo by five strokes. Paul Jones led the team with a 107 score. Payton Epperson and Levi Hellinger both shot 111 while Keelyn Case shot 125 to add to the team’s total. Brayden Odom’s score of 135 was not included in the team’s total.
Both Saint Jo team’s were one spot from qualifying for regionals, finishing in third place. The good news was both teams top players did well enough to qualify for the regional tournament individually.
Julian Luna shot 109 and Payzlie Cervantes shot 130, which were good enough to move on.

Langford coming back home

Nocona is welcoming back Coach Sandy Langford, former coach and alumnus for the Lady Indians, as its new volleyball head coach.
Langford comes back to Nocona after spending the past 11 years leading the Glen Rose volleyball program.
Her circumstances with her family allowed her to jump at the opportunity once she became aware the position at Nocona was available.
“My youngest graduated and is playing football at Midwestern (State University),” Langford said. “All of our family is here and I knew that Coach Kara (Lucherk) was leaving. We were eventually going to retire here. Our oldest son plays college football at West Texas A&M and we’ll be two hours closer to him as well.”
She again will lead the Lady Indians volleyball program, one that she led all the way to the state title game in 2011, which is the farthest the volleyball program has ever gone in its prestigious history.
Langford kept up that level of success during her 11 years at the bigger 4A Glen Rose. She won less than 20 games only twice during her time, winning her 500th career game back in 2023. Her teams were ranked among the top 10 in the state five times and Langford led Glen Rose to the state tournament in 2017, the best finish in program history.
With the Lady Indians also having its own string of success, appearing in back-to-back regional finals while finishing atop the district standings both years, Langford is excited to not just keep the success going, but shoot for the stars.
“We are not expecting anything less than a state championship,” Langford said.
She has stacked the non-district schedule with strong, state-ranked 3A and 4A teams as well as big tournaments that will test Nocona’s mettle early next season in the hopes it will prepare them for a long playoff run.
