HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: State tournament begins today

The pairings are set for the University Interscholastic League state softball tournament, which begins today.
The tournament will take place at Red and Charline McCombs Field at the University of Texas at Austin.
In Conference 3A, Whitewright is set to take on Hallettsville at 3 p.m. while East Bernard and Comanche play at 6 p.m.
Conference 2A will take place earlier in the day today, with Harleton taking on Bosqueville at 9 a.m. and then Hawley vs. Shiner at noon. Hawley and Harleton have but two losses and Hawley advanced to state by sweeping Archer City this past weekend.
Conference 4A games will be on June 4 with Huffman Hargrave squaring off with Snyder at 9 a.m. and then Needville against Texarkana’s Pleasant Grove at noon.
The Conference 2A final will take place at 3 p.m. and then 3A at 6 p.m.
On June 5, Conferences 5A and 6A takes stage.
In 5A, Aledo plays Fort Bend Ridge Point at 9 a.m. followed by Hallsville against Cedar Park Vista Ridge at noon.
The 6A semifinals will have Katy taking on Conroe The Woodlands at 3 p.m. followed by San Benito versus Lewisville at 6 p.m.
On June 6, the remainder of championship games take place with 4A at 10 a.m., 5A at 1 p.m. and 6A at 4 p.m.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.

“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”

Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
