HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: Bowie opens season at Decatur

The Bowie High School boys’ and girls’ tennis teams opened the season on Thursday with a dual at Decatur.
Weather was surprisingly mild for the opener, and Bowie had some success. Eight-game pro-sets were played.
Bowie garnered all three mixed doubles matches, with Sergio De Leon and Veronica Hernandez winning 8-3, 8-4. Josh Monkres and Sophie Brown won 8-0, 8-4. And Michael Shaw and Maria Gonzalez were winners 8-2, 6-1.
State-qualifying girls’ doubles team Meagan and Myah Russell played a boys’ doubles team from Decatur, and suffered an 8-0, 8-2 loss.
Carcyn Robertson and Jessie Roth teamed up to win 8-6, 8-5 and Yesenia Rivera and Jasmine Hernandez won a single eight-game pro-set 8-4. Read more in the Jan. 30 Bowie News.
Mardi Gras Fun Run Feb. 6
There will be five-kilometer fun run during the upcoming Nocona Mardi Gras celebration.
The run is set for 10 a.m. on Feb. 6, which will start at the Methodist Church and end on Clay Street.
Registration is set for 9 a.m., and awards will be at 11 a.m. at Mardi Gras headquarters.
There is a T-shirt for sale; and live music and beads will be a part of it.
There will be age group awards in 10-year increments, and light refreshments will be served.
Registration costs $30. Packets may be picked up on the day of the race.
The event will benefit the Nocona Band Boosters.
