OUTDOORS: TPWD reports kayak deaths increase
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is reporting a troubling spike of boating-related fatalities – many of them involving paddle craft such as canoes and kayaks.
Texas game wardens are prompting a call for boaters to wear life jackets, avoid drinking alcohol and follow other safety practices.
Peak boating season is upon us.
The TPWD reports more than a dozen boating-related fatalities have occurred this year; and nearly half of them were in kayaks.
Another four open-water fatalities took place during the weekend of June 25-26, including drowning and other boating accidents.
“These tragedies represent an alarming trend we’re seeing not just in Texas, but nationwide,” said Texas Game Warden Assistant Commander Cody Jones. “In 2015, more than 40 percent of boating-related fatalities in Texas involved paddle craft.”
Weather conditions also have played a significant role in deaths, with heavy rains causing flooding of rivers and creeks. Read more in the July 9 Bowie News.
