Saturday afternoon, Nocona High School volleyball had a special ceremony to retire the No. 13.
Lane Fenoglio wore the No. 13 when she played for the Lady Indians in the late-1990s.
“I thought it was a special tribute,” said Larry Fenoglio, Lane’s father and one of the organizers for the Buckle Up For Lane’s Sake Tournament. “It was not expected.”
Glenna Clay originally retired the No. 13 when she was head coach at Nocona, but the number returned to circulation when libero Magye Fenoglio chose to wear the number.
“I was so excited,” Clay said. “Lane was such a coachable player. I thought she was going to be good.”
Lane Fenoglio was moved up from junior varsity to varsity during the 1997 season. The Lady Indians advanced to the regional final that year before falling to Jarrell.
Lane was killed in an auto accident on July 11, 1998. She was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, and the tournament has served as advocacy ever since. Read more in the Sept. 7 Bowie News.
