Jackrabbits lose in last seconds

Published

on

The thread of victory got snatched away from the Bowie Jackrabbits on Friday as they played at Bridgeport.
After leading the whole game, Bowie lost the lead in the final seconds of the game 38-35.
The Jackrabbits started the game offensively on fire. Ty Harris scored from 3 yards out on their opening drive. Next drive Payton Price hit Boo Oakley across the middle and he took it the rest of the way for a 58 yard touchdown. A good two-point conversion put Bowie up 15-0.
Bridgeport’s quarterback Jadon Maddux got loose and ran for a 27-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 15-7, but Price was able to find Jed Castles for an 18-yard touchdown pass putting the Jackrabbits up 22-7. Before the first quarter was done, the Bull’s Christian Hand ran for a 70-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 22-14 heading into the second quarter.
Bowie went up by two scores again when Price found Castles again, using his six-foot-six inch frame to out jump the corner for a 16-yard touchdown. The Jackrabbits led 29-14. Maddux got loose again and scored on a 19 yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 29-21 heading into halftime.
Bowie was able to go back up by two scores on a play that saw Price buy time with his legs before throwing a pass up the seem to Joey Crawford, who took the ball to the house for a 63 yard touchdown. The extra point was no good to give the Jackrabbits a 35-21 lead. The Bulls answered back with their own drive as Hand scored from three yards out to cut the lead to one score 35-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
One thing or another kept Bowie’s offense from adding to their lead in the fourth quarter. Penalties played a huge part of the game for both teams, as the Jackrabbits were penalized 13 times, stalling drives.
Bridgeport cut the lead to 35-31 with a 32 yard field goal about halfway through the fourth quarter. Bowie ran some clock, but had to punt it back to the Bulls with about two minutes left and needing a touchdown to win.
Bridgeport moved down the field to the Jackrabbit’s 14 yard line, but Bowie’s defense was doing all it could to halt the Bulls as they started to run out of downs. On fourth down, Maddux threw the ball down the right sideline, where only his receiver Nolan Hernandez could get it. The extra point gave Bridgeport their first lead 38-35 with less than 30 seconds left. There would be no miracle play for Bowie.
