Saint Jo loses at Muenster
The Saint Jo Panthers had another stiff challenge on Friday as they traveled to Muenster to take on another 2A school during district play.
It was tough going for the Panthers as too many walks on defense and not enough hits on offense led to a 13-0 loss to the Hornets in five innings.
Saint Jo started the game at the plate and things looked promising. Connor Thompson led off with a single. A wild pitch allowed Thompson to advance to second base and into scoring position. Next batter Tyler Cook drew a walk to put two runners on and no outs.
A ground out for the first out advanced both runners into scoring position. Unfortunately, the next two batters struck out swinging to end the scoring chance for the Panthers.
After getting the first batter out, Muenster collected two hits two walks and a hit batter for two runs and the bases loaded. After striking out a batter for the second out, a single up the middle scored two more runs for the Hornets to give them a 4-0 lead before Saint Jo got the third out.
With two outs, Pepe Gam hit a single to get on base. The next batter Trevor Conner hit a ground ball and was able to reach first thanks to an error at first base. The Panthers again had two runners on base, but could not take advantage of it as the next player popped up to second base for the third out.
The Hornets made Saint Jo aware the first inning on offense was no fluke by them. The leadoff batter hit a home run on the third pitch. Three more hits, two walks and a few errors allowed Muenster to up the score to 10-0 before the first out of the inning was recorded.
The Panthers gave up one more hit, but were able to retire the next two batters to end the second inning.
With all the success Saint Jo’s hitters had had up to that point with no runs, the third inning the Panthers had no luck. All three batters were retired in order as no base runners were able to get on base and threaten the defense.
The Hornets led off with two drawn walks. Saint Jo was able to get two quick outs to keep the runners from scoring. Unfortunately, the Panthers pitchers could not find the strike zone as two more walks drove in a run to make the score 11-0 before Saint Jo could collect the third out.
In the fourth inning, the Panthers Cody Thurman was able to get one base with a single and two outs. Trying to be aggressive, the pinch runner stole second base and was then caught trying to steal third base to end the chance.
The Hornets were able to hit another solo-home run. Muenster then added another run with a walk, a fielding error and a single to make the score 13-0. Another walk loaded the bases, but Saint Jo was able to turn the inning ending double play to put an end to the bleeding early as the game moved to the fifth inning.
The Panthers needed to score at least four runs to avoid being run ruled. Unfortunately, they could not get any base runners on as they were sat down in order, losing 13-0.

Several Bowie athletes competed at the Wildcat Relays in Santos on March 20.
A couple of athletes did well enough to break school records along with placing well in their events.
Samara McChesney got second place in the girl’s pole vault with a vault of 8 feet 6 inches, breaking the school record for the Lady Rabbits.
Isaac Renteria got first place in the 3200 meter race, with his time of 9:59 that broke the school’s record in the event.
There were several athletes who also did well for Bowie even if they did not break school records.
Brayden Willett got first in the 800 meters and second in the 3200 meter race.
Braden Rhyne won the triple jump and got second in the high jump. Tyler Richey got second in the 110 meter hurdles.
Laney Segura and Ollie Gaston got third and fourth in the 800 meter race.
Olivia Richey got fifth in the 100 meter hurdles and Angela Alvarez got fifth in the 3200 meter race.
Both the boy and girl teams competed in the 4×100 relay event and finished in sixth place.

Nocona
The Nocona Lady Indians went 1-1 in their first round of district play last week.
The Lady Indians won a competitive game at Era 5-2, but then fell to Muenster by run-rule 15-0 after four innings.
Nocona came in with a big winning streak, but most of the wins were against familiar teams and the Lady Indians knew they would have to play at their best in a district that is expected to be tough.
The Lady Indians played at Era on March 18. The Lady Hornets took the early lead 1-0 in the first inning. Nocona tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning when Kaitlyn Tiffner scored on the base paths thanks to an error.
Era got the lead back with one run in the fourth inning , but then the Lady Indians got their first lead in the fifth inning. Ma’leigha Franklin drove in two runs on a sacrifice fly ball to put Nocona up 3-2.
The Lady Indians got some insurance in the sixth inning when Tinley Cable hit a two-run inside the park home run.
Nocona held on to win 5-2. Kylea Wallace led the team two hits as the team only had six all game. The hits were extremely opportunistic for the Lady Indians to score as much as they did.
Reagan Phipps allowed only two runs on seven hits while striking out 12 batters and walking three. The defense committed only one fielding error behind her.
Nocona was happy to get the close win to start district, but then came a big dose of bummer that threw sand in the potato salad of last week.
It was the Lady Indians home district opener, but Muenster had a huge second inning scoring 11 runs and it was all over from there. Nocona only got one hit from Phipps on offense as the Lady Indians lost 15-0 after four innings.
Saint Jo
The Saint Jo Lady Panthers were able to pick up a win against 1A Bryson last week, but fell to Graford and Perrin-Whitt later.
The Lady Panthers beat the Cowgirls 19-4, but then fell to 2A Graford 18-6 and fellow 1A team Perrin-Whitt 23-13.
Saint Jo played Bryson at home on March 18 and dominated, getting the win in three innings by run-rule 19-4.
Symbri Evans led the team with three RBIs while Kamron Skidmore and Mercedes Diaz each drove in two runs each. The team drew 15 walks and were hit by seven pitches.
So all three hits were big deals, like Skidmore hitting a home run.
Maxey Johnson allowed four runs (three earned) on two hits while striking out four batters. The defense committed only two fielding errors.
The next two games saw Saint Jo walk too many batters to keep the games close. Against Graford the team walked 15 batters and against Perrin-Whitt it was 16 batters.

The Bowie golf teams competed last week in their final events before district play starts this week.
The Lady Rabbits played at the Jim Ned Invitational at Shady Oaks and got second place. The boy’s team played in the Waxahachie Spring Fling at the Golf Club of Dallas and got sixth place.
The girl’s team shot 391 and was led by Miley Thompson who scored 91 and got third place individually. Tess Egenbacher (95), Hanna Bell (101) and Kendall Fallis (104) rounded out the team’s score.
Lillie Maddox shot 108, but it did not add to the team’s total.
Reegen Ferguson competed individually and shot 97.
The boy’s team shot 351 and the player with the lowest score was Hunter Lea who got an 83. Zac Harris (85) Huntter Fluitt (90) and Rayder Mann (93) rounded out the team’s final score.
Caden Belcher’s score of 96 did not add to the team’s total.
Cason Airington competed individually and shot an 86.
