GIRLS BASKETBALL: Okie-ranked Turner girls rip Saint Jo

The Saint Jo High School girls’ basketball team had the daunting task of taking on Turner of Burneyville, Okla., on Tuesday.
For the Lady Panthers, simply dribbling or passing the ball past half court was a challenge as the Falcons overwhelmed Saint Jo 66-17 at “The Dome.”
Turner is currently ranked 12 in Class A up in Oklahoma. The Falcons qualified for Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association state tournament last season, bowing out to Seiling in the opening round.
It marked the second time this season Saint Jo played Turner.
“Turner is 12-deep and they play a tough, physical style,” Saint Jo head coach Glenn Boerger said. “They are the best shooting team we have seen, easily, this season. They will be a tough out in the Oklahoma playoffs.”
If last year’s Saint Jo roster was still available to play, the game would have been competitive.
But, not so much now as the Lady Panthers are in rebuilding mode for the future.
Turner’s suffocating defense didn’t even allow Saint Jo to score in the opening quarter, and the Lady Panthers didn’t tally their first two points until 5 minutes, 48 seconds was left in the second stanza. Read more, and see the complete box score, in the weekend Bowie News.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
