Bowie, Nocona marching bands advance to area

Montague County’s “warrior” marching bands took on the regional contests last Saturday and brought home straight first division scores from all three judges advancing to area contest on Oct. 26.
Both Bowie and Nocona High School’s marching bands will be battling to earn chance to advance to state contest which alternates years for bands. The musicians travel to C. H. Collins Stadium in Denton. Nocona marches at 1:30 p.m. and Bowie at 4:15 p.m.
There will be 23 band performing during the day’s preliminaries, and 10 of the bands will be selected based on their scores to march in the finals. Four bands from the finals will move onto the state competition on Nov. 6 in San Antonio in the Alamodome.
At the area contest, the judging panel goes from three to five and scores are numerical not division ratings. Three judges will score music and two will score marching which will include the color guard. Each band can receive up to 5,000 points. Read the full story on the bands in the mid-week Bowie News.

JBD Bass Tournament postponed

Due to high lake levels at Lake Amon G. Carter, the Jim Bowie Days Association organizers announced Friday the tournament has been postponed and a new date will be named soon.

AgriLife Extension hosting preserving the harvest workshop

Texas AgriLife Extension will host a July workshop on July 26, Preserving the Harvest, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church of Montague County, 300 W. Nelson.
This four-part series will teach and review the food preservation processes including water bathing, pickling, dehydrating and pressure canning. This program will have both education and hands-on activities with take-home practice.
Seating is limited so call the extension office to register at 894-4831.

Cantwell to lead Pioneer Court

The 2025 Pioneer Court will be led by Joan Cantwell as the pioneer queen, with Duchesses Bill Ann Jones and Sue Swint.
A coronation of the court will be at 2:30 p.m. on June 27 at the Bowie Community Center. The public is invited to attend the crowning followed by a reception hosted by the Amity Club of Bowie.
