Wreaths Across America seeks local sponsors
In an effort to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun in 1992 by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester, The Amity Club and the Maids and Matrons Club of Bowie have joined more than 1,200 participating locations across the country to support the 2019 National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 14.
Both clubs are members of General Federation of Women’s Clubs – Texas, which is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
There are 300 wreathes will be available for Elmwood Cemetery and may be purchased on-line at www.WreathsAcrossAmerica.org. Cutoff date for purchases made for Elmwood Cemetery is Dec. 1. Local contact is Patti Poe who may be reached at ppoetfwc59@gmail.com.
The mission to “Remember, Honor, Teach” by raising funds to place remembrance wreaths on the graves of military members in Elmwood Cemetery, Bowie, Texas, was made possible through efforts made to join with Wreathes Across America and become a host for the placement of wreathes and a ceremony commemorating the fallen on Dec. 14. Volunteers are welcome to gather at 10:30 a.m. with the ceremony beginning at 11:00 a.m. Address of the cemetery is 1115 E. Nelson, Bowie.
To volunteer locally, or at Arlington National Cemetery use that same website address. If you live elsewhere and wish to purchase a wreath for someone at Elmwood Cemetery go to that address and look for Elmwood Cemetery, Bowieand follow the prompts.
The Montague County Commissioner’s Court will meet at 9 a.m. on Oct. 12 in the County Courtroom at the Courthouse Annex in Montague.
Commissioners are scheduled to consider issuing a proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month within Montague County.
The court also will consider accepting $850 in unanticipated revenue for the sheriff’s office generated during National Night Out activities, alongside interlocal cooperation contracts between the Texas Department of Public Safety and Justices of the Peace for Precincts 1 and 2.
An executive session is scheduled to discuss personnel matters pertaining to sewer/septic inspector for the county. Any action would be taken back in open session.
The Oct. 9-11 Art of the Song Music and Art Festival opens Friday night for three days of art and entertainment in downtown Nocona.
The festival opens on Oct. 9 with a Chisholm Trail Art Association Preview Party from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the H.J. Justin Building.
Come see all the entries for the adult show, which formally opens at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10.
Live music will be played by Full Circle Band.
Also on Oct. 9 enjoy a Nocona Nights Street Dance from 7 to 9 p.m. with the Mark Murphey and Highway 82 Band. Cost is $10 per ticket and $200 for a table seating eight. Bring your lawn chairs.
