HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Forestburg boys get past Saint Jo

The Forestburg and Saint Jo High School boys’ basketball teams battle each other hard.
As the old sports cliché goes, overall season records don’t mean a thing.
The Longhorns and Panthers played a competitive District 1A-21 game on Tuesday, and both teams had opportunities for victory.
Wyatt West, who tallied 19 points to lead all scorers, converted a couple of free throws to close Forestburg’s lead to 46-41 with 1 minute, 38 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
But Skyler Sandusky responded by making a bank shot on the Longhorns’ next possession and J.D. Moore scored the only point in the final minute on a free throw as Forestburg won 49-41.
The Longhorns appeared to snap out of their mid-season doldrums while Saint Jo elevated its performance against nearby rivals.
“Our kids did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game,” Saint Jo head boys’ basketball coach Brian Blank said. “Forestburg likes to get up and down the floor to take advantage of kids not getting back on defense and I thought we did a good job of getting back on defense and limiting their easy layups.”
Saint Jo dipped to 8-9 overall, 2-2 District 1A-21 while Forestburg improved to 10-8, 3-1. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
