Cemetery board plans fish fry Aug. 26
The Montague County Cemetery Board will have its annual Fish Fry Fundraiser on Aug. 26 .
Crappie and catfish will be served along with all the trimmings at the Forestburg Community Center. All you can eat is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Serving will begin at 5 p.m. and take-out will be available.
In the late 1990s, Jack and Marie Loftin compiled a book of all 115 cemeteries of Montague County and the people buried there. One listing in the book is Harvill Graves, located at Fort Bingham south of Forestburg. It is shown to contain four graves, one adult and three children. The only marked grave is Sarah Mary McGee, wife of Jim S. The Loftin book has her death listed as 1861.
The story that has been told through the years is Sarah and the children were making their way to the Fort to escape an Indian attack. Using this information, along with information on the location of the fort, the cemetery board was able to locate not only Fort Bingham, but the four graves as well. This project is ongoing but the people of this county that were interested in preserving history helped to located not only lost graves, but a historical site as well.
The cemetery board works strictly on donations so come and enjoy wild caught fish and support the cemetery board’s efforts to preserve Montague County’s pioneer history and cemeteries.
