HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Holliday hexes Nocona boys again

For the Nocona High School boys’ basketball team, playing Holliday has been very much like the old Dr. Seuss “Green Eggs and Ham” tale.
Nocona tried with might.
But, the Indians couldn’t beat the Eagles at the Fantasy of Lights of Tournament in Wichita Falls back in November – falling 65-62 in the third-place game.
Then, during the District 3A-9 slate, Nocona lost to Holliday at the Eagles’ place 58-51. The Indians then suffered a 54-36 home setback against Holliday.
Last Friday in a Conference 3A tie-breaker game, Holliday once again beat Nocona, this time by a count of 57-43 at Burkburnett High School.
This was yet another physical clash between the Indians and Eagles, leaving players battered, bruised, and even bloodied.
“They have all that size inside,” Nocona head coach Tyson Mankin said regarding why Holliday has been such a tough match-up for the Indians.
“We have to spend a lot of energy and effort defending those guys,” Mankin continued. “That leaves their guards with open looks, and they’ve been knocking down shots against us.”
Nocona is 17-13 overall, and 10-5 in 3A-9, which was good enough for third place. The Indians will play Whitesboro at 7:45 p.m. tonight in a Conference 3A bi-district game scheduled for Decatur.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
